This is one of the fastest growing, tallest, and generally biggest of all sunflowers. The massive flower and seed head appear atop a trunk that quickly grows to 3m (10') or more. Each produces hundreds of edible "striped confectionery" sunflower seeds.

Start indoors in mid March, or direct seed outside mid April to mid May. |

Sow seeds 2cm (1") deep, 15cm (6") apart. Thin or space to 30cm (12") apart. |
| Growing |
1-2 cups of fertilizer at seeding per 3m (10') row is enough for the whole season. When plants are 30cm (12") tall, dissolve 5mL (1tsp.) borax in 350mL (12oz.) water and spread over 5m (15') of row to supply enough boron to help the seeds develop in the big seed heads. Do not over apply. When the back of the seed heads turn yellow in the fall, cut them off the plant. Rub the seeds loose and dry them indoors on trays. |
