Bentonite clay is a highly effective soil amendment that improves the structure, water retention, and nutrient-holding capacity of sandy or light soils. Derived from volcanic ash, this colloidal clay acts as a binding agent that transforms fast-draining, nutrient-poor sand into a more productive, sponge-like growing medium.
Equivalency Measurement - 9 cups/2kg

Benefits for Garden Soil
  • Enhanced Water Retention: Bentonite swells on contact with water, allowing it to hold significantly more moisture, which reduces irrigation frequency and protects plants from drought.
  • Improved Nutrient Retention: Its high cation exchange capacity (CEC) helps lock in essential nutrients, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium, preventing them from leaching away.
  • Soil Structure Improvement: It binds loose, sandy particles together, creating a better, more cohesive environment for root development.
  • Long-Lasting: Because it is a mineral, not organic matter, it does not decompose quickly and can provide permanent, one-time improvements to sandy soils.
How to Apply to Garden Soil
  • Best Soil Types: Highly beneficial for sandy or sandy loam soils. It should generally be avoided or used very sparingly in already heavy clay soils, as it can cause over-compaction.
  • Application Rates:
    • Sandy Soil: 2-10 pounds per square yard (roughly 1–5 kg per square meter).
    • Extremely Sandy/Repellent Soil: Up to 4 kg per square meter.
  • Application Method: Spread the dry granules or powder over the surface and till or dig it into the top 15–30 cm (6–12 inches) of soil.
  • Watering: It is crucial to water the area thoroughly after application to allow the clay particles to activate and swell.
  • Pairing with Organic Matter: For best results, pair bentonite with compost or manure to improve soil fertility and microbial life simultaneously.
Tips for Success
  • Use Calcium Bentonite: While Sodium Bentonite is excellent for sealing ponds, Calcium Bentonite is generally preferred for gardens because it is more stable and has a lower salt content.
  • Wear a Mask: The fine dust can be a breathing hazard; wear a mask during application.
  • Avoid Over-application: Using too much can make the soil too dense, reducing aeration.
  • For existing gardens or lawns, apply smaller amounts (1-2 kg per 10 square meters) over the top and water in over time to avoid damaging existing roots.
